No one has taken photographs covering such a wide area of China as Mr Shirakawa. What deserves special mention is that he obtained permission to photograph from the military, the first time such permission was given. Mr Shirakawa was able to take photos of the massive Himalayan mountain range stretching for 5,500km. For the first time it was possible to photograph from the Chinese side of the border the Himalayas: the Qaraquorum, Pamir and Tian Shan mountains. This was a unique achievement. The mountains border a number of countries running from Myanmar in the east, through Bhutan, Sikkim (formerly), Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan and finally, Russia.
